Including CSOs in Political Processes: Concurrent 1

Concurrent Session - CSOs as diverse and inclusive organisations - Breakout Room 1

How did a group of students create a giant teddy bear from the future to influence their government’s position on air quality data and educate an entire city about its growing air pollution problem?

In this session, Save the Children will present Shift – an innovative youth campaign accelerator project developed and piloted in Myanmar. Shift uses a youth-centric approach that maximises inclusiveness through participatory activities and experiential learning.

Shift is an attempt to disrupt and disperse institutional power - and re-think the way that larger INGOs successfully support civil society to deliver its own influence agenda.

Movements for change should be led by people, not organisations. To do this successfully we need to lose our own organisational ego and invest more into models that remove the barriers to participation, which are actually counterproductive to designing and delivering successful campaigns.

Find out more about Shift by watching this short video from the Centre’s 2019 Innovation Report.

Including CSOs in Political Processes: Concurrent 2

Concurrent Session - Including CSOs in political processes - Breakout Room 2

In 2019, Maecenata developed a category model that originally targeted foundations and the problem of their legitimacy. The main object was to go beyond just looking at impact and gain a real insight into what is driving the organisation. We are now in a discussion over whether this model could not be applied to any CSO, and have been quite successful in

Including CSOs in Political Processes: Concurrent 3

Concurrent Session - Inclusive Programmes - Breakout Room 3

Forus & the Asia Development Alliance (ADA) will present the key findings of a new Goal 16 & Civic Space report which both organisations launched at the UN LPF 2020. Workshop participants will then break into small groups to reflect on the recommendations of the report, and on how a more strategic approach to monitoring SDG 16 could help promote greater civic space, an enabling environment and the inclusion of CSOs in political processes. Participants will be asked to generate new civic space and enabling environment indicators, which will measure CSO inclusion in political processes. Participants will then produce recommendations for the next steps that their own organisations and other CSOs can take in pushing this important agenda forward.

For more information about the topic please check out Forus's blog on the Centre's website https://icscentre.org/2020/09/24/civic-space-is-shrinking-heres-how-we-can-protect-fundamental-rights/

Including CSOs in political processes concurrent 4

Concurrent Session - CSOs as diverse and inclusive organisations - Breakout Room 4

With this year's Global Perspectives having 'inclusive programmes' as one of its pillars, we at Parliamentary Network Africa (PNAfrica) will want the opportunity to present on our concept of "Democratisation of Parliamentary Information."

Parliaments the world over, are the fulcrum around which diversities and futures must revolve. This is because when a nation's parliament meets, the entire nation is considered as having met since the legislature represents citizens. However, although the principles of parliamentary openness is unambiguous about the fact that "parliamentary information belongs to the people" many people living in marginalised and/or rural communities in many countries do not have access to timely and accurate information of what happens in their parliament. Young people, persons with disabilities, women and other minority groups have also suffered a similar fate in many countries, particularly in Africa where we operate.

The concept of Democratisation of Parliamentary Information is one developed to ensure that everybody, irrespective of where you live in a country or your peculiar circumstances, must have access to information from your Parliament. This concept, just like the Global Perspectives, leverages the joint efforts of CSOs, media (particularly rural and community radio), the public institution of Parliament and other stakeholders towards working to ensure that people always know what happen in their parliament and understand opportunities available to them to engage with the legislature and elected officials.

The Right of Inclusion

The dialogue will range across accessibility of political processes, the value of active roles for PWDs, including the role of DPOs vs individuals, plus a view on where the disability movement is now and the current burning issues. It will touch on what Vladimir describes as ‘the brutal awakening of Covid-19, where the world forgot everything about disability in the first few weeks’.  It will also cover the need for capacity building of DPOs and the need to mainstream disability across other CSOs.

CSOs in Political Processes Concurrent 2

Concurrent Session - Inclusive Programmes - Breakout Room 2

In this session, CBM and the National Forum of Women with Disabilities (Pakistan) will explore how representative organisations of persons with disabilities can effectively influence policymaking at the local level. Community-Based Inclusive Development (CBID) as an effective approach for realising the obligations of UNCRPD and the SDGs will be introduced. Practical examples of policy influencing at the community level will be shared and discussed. The content of the session will be linked to the panel discussion that precedes it as well as to the professional context of the participants.

CSOs in Political Processes Concurrent 3

Concurrent Session - Including CSOs in political processes - Breakout Room 3

The session, with OECD and All Out, will provide unique insights on achievements, remaining challenges and the way forward  to ensure equal treatment of LGBTI people.

The OECD will present its latest report “Over the Rainbow? The Road to LGBTI Inclusion” that provides a comprehensive overview of the extent to which laws protect LGBTI people against discrimination and violence in OECD countries, as well as an analysis of the broader policies that should be implemented to strengthen the inclusion of LGBTI people. The OECD will discuss how CSOs can use this report to their benefit.

All Out will present case studies showing how CSOs can effectively promote and support the human rights of LGBTI people in countries where they are threatened, including taking concrete actions on the so-called “LGBT Free Zones” in Poland.

Concurrent Session - Including CSOs in political processes - Breakout Room 4

Organisations from all over the world have used digital techniques as the catalyst to build or harness the energy of existing movements in order to bring about the change they want to see.

Greenpeace, the ACLU and countless political campaigns from all over the world (Obama through Bernie & Trump) have all applied movement building techniques to their successes and we can learn a lot from them.

In this session Paul will explain the theory behind digital mobilisation and how it applies to charities all over the world, giving examples of it in action.

Concurrent Session - Breakout Room 1

During the session we will share insights from the Solidarity Playbook, a collection of case studies on resilience mechanisms of international civil society organisations and coalition responses to civic space restrictions and changing operating conditions for civil society.

Together with Felicia Anthonio, we will dive into one of the case studies and learn about #KeepItOn Campaign which fights against internet shutdowns globally by applying different approaches such as grassroots advocacy, direct engagement with policy makers, technical support, and legal interventions. With Deborah Doane we will discuss key learnings for civil society organisations and coalitions from 16 Solidarity Playbook case studies.
